Introduction
If you are checking whether parking is free in Dubai today, first identify the car park you are using. As checked on Sunday, 4 October 2026, ordinary public parking generally follows the Sunday free-parking rule. That answer does not cover every private, special or multi-storey car park in the city.
Use this guide as a way to check your bay each time you park. The calendar alone cannot tell you whether a shopping centre, hospital, development or barrier-controlled car park has its own charges. The operator and sign are the details that turn a broad rule into an answer for your car.
Check your actual bay in four steps
- Identify the operator. Look at the sign, payment machine or entrance board to establish who manages the parking. A municipal street bay and a private venue may both use smart payment technology while following different rules.
- Read the paid days and hours. Check for seven-day operation, special conditions, a maximum stay or a free allowance. A short free period is different from a whole day without charges.
- Check a current official notice. For a holiday, confirm the dates covered and when charging resumes. Use Parkin’s official channels for its parking rather than an old holiday message forwarded in a group chat.
- Keep any required validation. A venue may offer free parking only after a purchase, appointment or validation. Ask how that permission is recorded before you leave, especially in a car park that recognises number plates automatically.

If the sign is unclear, check the location in the operator’s app or ask the venue. Do not decide based on an empty payment machine or the fact that another driver walked away without paying. That driver may have a permit, an active ticket or a different reason for being covered.
Public parking and the main exceptions
Dubai’s variable public parking policy describes chargeable hours between 8am and 10pm, with Sundays and public holidays excluded from the ordinary charging calendar. Location-specific rules still need to be checked. These hours should not be applied automatically to every facility carrying a parking sign.
| Parking type | How to decide whether it is free |
|---|---|
| Ordinary public street parking | Check the general calendar together with the bay’s sign |
| A zone with special posted conditions | Follow the days, hours and tariff displayed there |
| Multi-storey car park | Check its tariff; these facilities can charge around the clock |
| Mall, hospital or private development | Check the venue’s allowance, validation and operator rules |
An example of venue-specific terms is Al Ghurair Centre’s published Parkin parking policy. Read a venue’s own conditions rather than extending its offer to another shopping centre. Even neighbouring car parks can have different free periods.
Sundays and official holidays
Sunday is the usual free day for ordinary Dubai public parking. Friday is not the equivalent free day under that system. If you drive between emirates, check Sharjah’s parking hours and free-day rules separately; a familiar rule from one city can be wrong in the next.
A public holiday exemption should be tied to a dated announcement. Check both the first free day and the date charging returns. A multi-day holiday can also bring different transport hours, so include the return trip and parking coverage in your plan rather than checking only the morning you arrive.
An exemption removes the applicable parking charge; it does not remove restrictions on where a car can be left. Reserved bays, accessible parking requirements, blocked entrances and stopping restrictions remain separate matters. An apparently free bay is still unsuitable if your car is not permitted to use it.
Overnight stays and unclear signs
If you leave the car overnight in an ordinary public bay, check when the next chargeable period begins. An evening free period does not guarantee that the following morning is free. Set a reminder before the paid hours start, or move the car before the next day’s conditions apply.
When payment is needed, the Dubai parking SMS guide explains how to match a permit to the plate and zone. For a shopping trip, also check access and parking information for your actual destination, such as Al Khail Mall, before assuming a venue’s parking is part of a citywide exemption.
Final check before walking away
Use the date, operator and posted conditions together. If all three confirm free parking, you can plan your visit with a clear understanding of the bay. If one remains uncertain, resolve it through the operator or venue while you are still beside the car.
