Introduction
Sharjah parking SMS lets you pay for a public parking bay from your phone. For a Sharjah private plate, a one-hour example is SHJ 12345 1, sent to 5566. Replace the sample number with your own plate, then wait for the message that confirms your parking permit.
The sign beside your car still matters. It tells you who runs the bay and when payment is required. Sharjah Municipality changed its paid parking hours from 1 July 2026, so an older guide that ends ordinary paid hours at 10pm may give you the wrong answer. The rules below were checked on 4 October 2026.
How to pay Sharjah parking by SMS
Start by reading the nearest parking sign and checking that it covers your bay. This guide covers municipal public parking; a private development or another operator can use a different payment system. Photograph the sign if you expect to return late or have trouble reading its conditions.
- Check your plate details. Use the plate source and number shown on your vehicle registration. Sharjah’s source abbreviation is SHJ. For another emirate or a special plate, check the format on the municipality’s SMS guide rather than copying a Sharjah example.
- Create the message. Type
SHJ 12345 1for a fictional Sharjah plate and one hour, with a space between each part. Those spaces let the system separate the plate source, number and duration. - Send it to 5566. The service supports UAE mobile numbers on e&/Etisalat and du. A prepaid phone needs enough credit to cover the parking payment and SMS charge; a postpaid payment is billed through the mobile account.
- Read the confirmation. Match the plate and expiry time against your car and visit. Keep this reply until you leave, because a sent message alone does not show that the parking transaction succeeded.

UAE private plates can use the service without registration. The municipality requires registration for non-private plates and plates from GCC countries. A rental car also needs its own correct plate details; paying for a different vehicle stored in your messages will not cover the car you parked today.
Charges and extra parking time
The municipality’s SMS information lists a 38-fils transaction fee for each message sent to 5566. This sits beside the parking tariff rather than replacing it. Read the bay’s current tariff and the transaction reply before relying on a total copied from an old post or screenshot.
The official pages contain conflicting wording about longer SMS bookings: one passage describes one-hour tickets, while another lists several durations. A one-hour example is the clear starting point. If you need several hours, use the duration accepted by the current service and make sure the confirmation covers your whole stay.
A reminder is normally sent ten minutes before expiry. To add another hour at the same location, send Y to 5566, then check the new confirmation and expiry. Set your own phone reminder too, especially if a meeting could keep you away from the car longer than expected.
Extending a short ticket is different from renewing a longer parking subscription. Regular drivers should use the Sharjah parking renewal guide for permits, covered areas and validity checks. Buying extra SMS time does not renew a subscription that has expired.
Sharjah parking timing and free-day exceptions
From 1 July 2026, Sharjah Municipality’s paid public parking hours run from 8am to midnight. The announced change covers Sharjah City, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid. The municipality also brought yellow-sign areas into line with the hours already used in blue-sign areas.
| Parking situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Ordinary municipal paid parking | Payment during the posted 8am–midnight charging hours |
| Friday or an official holiday | Generally free, except areas that charge throughout the week and holidays |
| A bay marked as paid seven days a week | Its sign still applies on Fridays and holidays |
| Private premises or another operator’s parking | The operator’s own hours, tariffs and payment method |
For “Sharjah parking free today,” identify the exact bay first. A Friday can be free in an ordinary municipal area while a nearby seven-day zone remains paid. A public holiday exemption also does not grant permission to use a reserved bay, block an entrance or park outside the marked space.
Dubai uses a separate public parking system. If your next stop is across the emirate boundary, read Dubai parking SMS instructions and use that location’s sign. Sending the Sharjah payment message while parked in Dubai is not a substitute for the correct permit.
If the message fails or the details are wrong
If no confirmation arrives, check your phone credit, recipient number, plate and spaces. Do not leave the car on the strength of a pending or failed message. Use another payment option shown on the sign, or contact the municipality through its official parking portal for help.
A wrong plate, rejected duration or different operator can explain why a payment has not covered the bay. Keep the replies and a photo of the sign if you need to raise a query. A successful payment for the wrong car should not be treated as a valid permit for the vehicle in front of you.
For a long trip from Al Jubail Bus Station, plan how the car will remain covered while you are away. Repeated short extensions may be awkward if your journey lasts all day, and a bus ticket does not include parking at the station.
Before you walk away
Check three things together: the rules on the bay’s sign, the plate in your confirmation and the permit’s expiry. Keeping that message and setting a reminder takes little effort, but it makes it much easier to spot an error while you can still correct it.
